Looking to become involved in Spokeland?
A great way to get started is to come by the shop during open hours. We’ll give you an introduction to the shop and how we operate. Ask anyone in the shop with a name tag and we’ll get you started on a volunteer project! There are tasks for everyone regardless of skill level or ability, and opportunities to shadow and learn new skills.
If you want to get further involved, we invite you to attend our Operations Meeting or Volunteer Orientation, held on alternating Sundays after our normal open hours. Depending on your skill set and interests, you may want to attend both!
Volunteer Orientation, Biweekly Sundays 6 PM (18:00)
If you have bicycle or mechanical experience and are looking to assist us in helping our patrons work on their own bikes, please attend the Volunteer Orientation so we can give you a quick overview on how we approach teaching our patrons. We most importantly emphasize these rules:
- Spokeland is a safe space, both physical and cultural. There is a sign in the shop that goes into greater detail about this if you’re interested, or ask any core member.
- Spokeland is an educational workshop. We enable community members to work on their own bikes. In short, this means: NO tool grabbing, and NO labor performed by our volunteers.
Operations Meeting, Biweekly Sundays 6 PM (18:00)
If you want to become involved in our behind-the-scenes operations or have any events, finance, grant writing, legal, or marketing/PR experience – we invite you to attend our Operations Meeting. Our shop operates on a consensus based decision making model. All attendees are welcome to vote in favor, or ask clarifying questions of our agenda items. Only Core Members may make a blocking vote.
Roles at Spokeland
- Patron - Anyone here to use the shop space and work on their own projects.
- Long Term Patrons - A patron who has donated for long term shop use. We offer daily, a year, or lifetime use.
- Volunteer - Someone here to help around the shop. You’re awesome! This person can be here for fun, to work-trade for shop use or used parts, or may want to become a Core Member in Training. After 10 hours of volunteering, your shop use is covered for the year.
- Core Member in Training - A volunteer who is training to become involved in helping to run Spokeland. Pick up a Volunteer Checklist in the shop to start your journey!
- Core Member - A volunteer who has met all the requirements on the Volunteer Checklist, and has been voted in at an Operations Meeting by current Core Members. There are responsibilities associated with being a Core Member, but there are also perks. Ask us!
